About Me:
“Happiness is the substrate of my life…” This is the motto I strive to live by. As I live and learn, I derive great joy from sharing what I discover with others. Inspiration is the fuel of my life, and I am inspired by many great people, places, experiences, and ideas. I seek to share that inspiration with others. To embody the radiant and healing energy of love is my goal; to enable others to do the same is my passion; to birth a better world by building networks of love- and light-filled people is the stuff of my most satisfying moments. As I am fond of repeating, “It's a wide world full of wonderful people.” I feel happy when others humbly recognize their own greatness, overcoming fear and negativity, unleashing their gifts and talents, finding flow, and elevating the collective wellbeing of the planet. When I do this work, I feel most alive.
Trained as a psychologist and now working as a professor of women's studies and African American studies, I recently published my first book, The Womanist Reader (Routledge, 2006). This book documents the first quarter century of womanist thought. To quote, “Womanism is a social change perspective rooted in Black women's and other women of color's everyday experiences and everyday methods of problem solving in everyday spaces, extended to the problem of ending all forms of oppression for all people, restoring the balance between people and the environment/nature, and reconciling human life with the spiritual dimension.” (p. xx). Womanism welcomes women and men as allies and collaborators. Womanism has a vernacular soul, that is, it's rooted in common folk, welcoming people of all backgrounds to the table. The goal of womanism is the harmonization and coordination of the world's diverse individuals and groups into a functioning, peaceful collective that operates according to an ethic of commonweal. As such, it is a liberationist project.
Here is a poem I like by Max Ehrmann:
I journeyed from university to university,
and I saw everywhere the past
rebuilt before the eyes of young men
and young women –
Egypt, Greece, Rome;
language, architecture, laws –
saw the earth and sky explained,
and the habits of the body –
Everywhere chairs of this and that,
largely endowed.
But nowhere saw I a chair
of the human heart.
In my spare time, I enjoy studying metaphysics, world religions and philosophies, critical perspectives on history and politics, integral perspectives on nutrition and healing, and sexualities. My leisure pursuits include travel with my visionary counterpart (both domestic and international), cooking (especially vegan and raw), exploring the wonders of nature, visiting art museums and gardens, and incessant photography. Every now and then, I like to entertain.
I am interested in connecting with people who have similar interests and goals, who see themselves as “Architects of the Future Society,” whose mindset is global, light, and loving, and whose energy is elevated. We need to network, share ideas, share resources, brainstorm, collaborate, and love-heal! Peace profound!
